A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well at Carrow Hollow had gone dry three summers running, and the miners' wives said it was the lamp-men who had taken the water down into the seams. Mabyn Quick did not believe a word of it. Her father had worked the upper level until his chest gave out. Now she went down the shaft each morning with a candle stub wedged in her cap and a tin of bread, and she tapped the rock with a hammer until she heard the hollow note that meant water, or copper, or nothing. Most days it was nothing. On the twelfth of October it rang like a bell, and beneath the grey clay she found a bed of old gold leaf, thin as a moth's wing, pressed flat between two slabs of slate. Someone had laid it there long ago, folded into the shape of a flower with its petals spread and its curled stems reaching out like the scrolls on a church gate.

She carried it up in her apron and laid it on the kitchen table. The lamp-men's widows came to look, and one of them, old Hesper Trudge, put a finger to the little silver beads set along the stem and said they were the drops that had gone missing from the well. Mabyn did not argue. She filled the kettle from the rain butt, and when the water boiled she set the gold flower on the sill in the sun, where it caught the light and threw it back across the room like a second window.
