Gold mandala tattoos on hand and forearm
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of the back of a hand and forearm decorated with metallic gold mandala and lace motifs, including a scalloped panel on the hand and a larger medallion on the forearm. The linework is fine and detailed, with a solid gold band and a narrow black lace strip sitting beside the wrist. The image is shot on a plain tiled floor with soft natural light, and rings are worn on several fingers.

The gold leaf would not lie flat on the damp transfer, so Dora Penhallow breathed on it, waited, and tried again. Beyond the shopfront on Sheaf Lane the last tram had gone, and the city had settled into its orange hum. She had three hours before the bells of St Ann's, and a commission that had arrived through the letterbox with no return address: a medallion with a scalloped border, a band of gold that had to sit a finger's width above a narrow strip of black lace.

The drawing had been done in pencil on the back of a pawn ticket. Dora knew the lace before she knew the hand that made it. Her grandmother had drawn exactly these loops in the margins of the household ledgers, the same small teardrops closing each petal, the same way of leaving a gap in the outer curve so the eye would walk round and find its way back. Nan had given the original pattern away in 1958 to a woman who sewed for the mills, and then the mills had closed and the woman had left for Leeds without a forwarding address.
She worked until the lamp began to gutter. The black lace went down first, thread by thread, with a brush no thicker than an eyelash. Then came the gold, lifted with a dry mop and laid over the wet ink so that the pattern seemed to surface from underneath, like something remembered. When she peeled the transfer away, the medallion came up whole and warm in the streetlight, and for a moment the shop was full of the ledgers' soft smell and her grandmother's voice telling her to leave the gap open. Dora propped the shutter high so the lamplight could fall across the gold, and went home without locking the door.
