Swirling ornamental designs on both hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown palms down, with dark ornamental scrollwork covering the backs of the hands, the wrists and several fingers. The design uses bold, flowing curls, filigree-like swirls and small dotted details, all in a single dark ink. The plain dark teal background and pale pink nails keep the focus on the pattern.

Nobody in Little Wenlow expected the ironwork on the Harrowby gates to be mended by a woman, least of all Mr Coates, who had sent his boy to fetch the blacksmith and got Dora Vane instead. She stood in the yard with a sheet of tracing paper pinned to a board, copying the old scrolls the way her father had taught her, one swirl at a time, so the new iron would not look like a stranger among the originals.

The work was slow. Each curl had to be heated, bent round the horn of the anvil, then filed to sit flush with the dot-punched bosses that ran between them. By the second week her sleeves were black to the elbow and the gate had begun to look like lace that someone had forgotten to take off the line. The men from the cider works stopped on their way past to watch, and one of them offered to show her how it was really done. She let him talk. Her hands knew the pattern better than his opinion did.
On the last morning Mrs Coates came out with a pot of tea and stood at the gate for a long time without speaking. "He measured these for our wedding," she said at last. "Thought the curls were too fussy. He was wrong, but he never once said so." Dora nodded and didn't ask what she wanted.
She hammered the final spiral closed as the sun cleared the orchard wall. The iron threw its pattern across the gravel, dark lace moving over the stones, and Mrs Coates stepped into it with her cup held carefully in both hands, as if she might spill the light.
