Mandala design on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown from above, with a dense ornamental design in dark brown-black ink covering the back of the hand and reaching towards the wrist. The central motif is a mandala-like medallion with petal shapes, diamonds and radiating lines, with smaller dotted and linear details along the fingers. The design is a single dark ink tone set against grey paving, with pale blue nail polish and sandals visible in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Leila, the paste went on last night in the back room above the bakery, with the fan turned off so it wouldn't dry too fast. I drew the centre first, a ring of petals with a dot in the middle, then ran the lines out from it like the spokes of a cart wheel. The diamonds went at the wrist, one above the other, so the whole thing looks like a little gate someone has left open. Your cousin kept asking how long it would take, and I kept telling her that henna is patient or it is nothing.

The small details took longest. Along the fingers I put fine dots and short strokes, and at the tip of the smallest finger a tiny star that Ruth says looks like a spark off a sparkler. Nobody speaks while the cone is working. You just listen to the soft scratch of it and watch the green-brown paste go dark against the skin. We wrapped everything in cling film and an old cotton bandage and sent her to bed with a mug of sweet tea.
In the morning the crust had cracked and flaked, and under it the lines were the colour of marmalade. By the evening they had gone to strong tea. Ruth says it deepens for two days more, so by Saturday it will be nearly black at the centre. Tell Yusuf his mother's bangles are still in the blue tin in the drawer, and that I have said the girls can wear them over the lines once the ink has settled. I will bring the spare cones on the train.
Love, Auntie Farida
