City skyline band on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A city skyline of tall buildings forms a horizontal band around the forearm. A tall spired tower stands at the left and a stepped spire rises at the right, with hatched and solid shading on the buildings. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin, with a red checked blanket and white bedding behind it.

I'd meant to sketch the view from the hotel terrace, but the fog had come up off the river, so all I could manage was the towers we could just make out through the glass: the tall one with the needle on top, and the stepped one with its crown lit like a chess piece.

You said my lines looked like a fence, so I went back over them with a fine pen, hatching the shadow sides the way Mr Okafor taught us at evening class, one stroke for every floor I could count. By the time the cake came round I had a whole skyline running the length of a napkin. Tom swore it was the best thing anyone had made that weekend, which tells you what kind of weekend it was.
You asked me last month to draw it again, properly, so you could take it somewhere that doesn't have one. I've enclosed the sheet. Keep the shadows on the left, because the light always came from the river side, and don't let anyone tell you the spires are too fussy to bother with. Whatever city you end up in, count the windows for me when you get there, and write down the number so I can check your arithmetic.
Love, Sam
