Goldfinch and thistle on a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A bright yellow goldfinch with black and white wing markings sits on a stem beside purple thistle flowers and green grass. The bird is shaded softly with detailed feather texture, while the flowers and background use loose, watercolour-style washes of pink, blue and green. The composition wraps the design across the top of the foot, with the bird as the central focus.

Dear Nell, the wind has been dead for four days, so I have had time to watch the bird. It came down onto the rigging off the Azores, a goldfinch no bigger than my thumb, yellow as lemon peel and tired to the bone. Cook says it blew out from the coast with the last of the land breeze and will be dead by Thursday. I have not told him I have been putting thistle heads in my pocket.

The thistles are my doing. There is a patch of them growing wild on the cliff at Pennerly, where we used to pick for Mother's table birds, and I remembered how the finches went mad for the seed heads when the purple came out. Last week I found a stalk caught on a barrel hoop in the hold, dried and furred, and cut it free. The bird picks at the down, then sits on the sun-warmed rail with its black and white wings folded, watching the water as if the sea owed it an apology.

On the third morning the Captain came up with his glass and said a bird on deck was a bad sign, that ships with birds aboard go down. I told him a goldfinch is luck to anyone who keeps one, and he laughed and said we had no cage. So I took the bosun's old sugar tin, punched holes in the lid, and the bird has slept in it since.

This morning the wind came back from the south-west, soft and steady, and the sails filled with a sound like a held breath let go. I opened the tin at the rail. The finch sat on my knuckle a long moment, then went straight up over the foresail and out towards a grey line of land I could not yet see. Tell Mother I kept my promise about the thistles. The crew are still asking me what I did with the sugar tin.
