Sunflower and birds on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with yellow petals and a dark brown centre dominates the design, with two small songbirds perched among the leaves on the right and left. The linework is soft and the shading builds realistic depth in the petals, feathers and foliage. Greens, yellows and browns make up the palette, and the motif fills an upright oval area of the leg.

The seed packet from the market promised six feet, and the tallest one on the balcony of Hollins House is barely four, leaning against the railings like it's waiting for a bus. Still, it's the one thing on Level Nine that hasn't come with a complaint attached.

The council sent a man on Tuesday about the damp again. He stood on the balcony in his orange jacket, looked at the big yellow head turned toward the sun, and asked if it was a fire hazard. I told him it was the only thing on this block that followed the rules. He wrote something down anyway.
Two coal tits have taken to it. Black caps, white cheeks, as if someone dusted them with flour. They sit on the stalk in the mornings, pick at the seed heads, and fly off toward the car park when the lads start their radios. I've started leaving a saucer of crumbs on the wall, which Frank would have called daft, though he always liked the birds more than he let on.
Last week one of them perched on the rim of my cup while I had my tea and looked at me as if I owed it rent. I told it the flower was the one that got away with everything, and it hopped off to the next leaf without saying otherwise. Come up at Easter if the lift works and see for yourself. Bring a jar for the seeds. Love, Maureen.
