Sparrow on a branch with autumn leaves

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A sparrow with grey, white and brown plumage and a black throat sits on a thin branch. Orange and amber maple leaves frame the bird and wrap around the branch on both sides. The bird is shaded with soft greys and fine detail in its feathers, while the leaves use warm, layered colour against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dismantling starts before the last customer has stopped screaming on the Cyclone, and by dusk you are on your knees in the mud beside the waltzer, wrestling a pin the size of your forearm out of its hole. Mick shouts from the generator that the lorries leave at six whether the field is clear or not. Your hands are black with diesel and the cold has got into your knuckles.

All season a sparrow has lived in the rigging above the waltzer. It hops along the striped canopy edge, nicks chips from the paper cones at the burger van and sits, unbothered, while the lights flicker on for children who never look up. Nobody has named it. You have, privately, and it answers to Tuppence when you whistle, which is a daft habit you would never admit to in front of Mick.

On the last hour the maples at the edge of Hollins Field have gone the colour of pub brass, and the leaves come down in slow spirals across the cordon. You carry the final crate of tickets to the wagon and stop. The sparrow is on the gatepost, grey back puffed against the wind, watching you as if you owe it money. You fish a stale bap from your coat pocket and crumble it onto the lowest branch of the nearest maple.

Mick's horn sounds. You climb into the cab with the heater roaring and the convoy pulls out onto the lane. In the wing mirror the field shrinks and the maple goes gold, and on its lowest branch a single bird is still there, picking at the crumbs while the leaves fall round it like coins from a machine that has finally paid out.
