Goonies Never Say Die lettering on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the phrase Goonies Never Say Die in bold block letters, with GOONIES in orange and DIE in a gradient of orange and yellow, all outlined in black. Above the lettering, black silhouettes of child-like figures, a taller creature and a small bird-like shape sit on the line of the text. The design fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a striped sleeve visible at the edge.

You find the gull first, a fat herring gull dropping a stolen crisp packet at your feet on the sea wall at Saltcombe, as if it had been waiting all week for you. Mrs Pargeter's boarding house sits behind you with its lace curtains and its sign saying no dogs, no bicycles, no exceptions. Your cousin Dale has already gone down the steps to the rocks with the others, and you can hear them shouting over the wind.

The map is folded into eighths and smells of sea salt and someone's chips. Bev Tully drew it in biro: a skull for the cave, an X for the wreck, and in the corner, in capitals pressed so hard the paper dented, the rule the four of you swore on a cracked crab shell back in March. GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE. You have half a chocolate bar and the tide is turning. Down in the cove, Ferris, the lad from the caravan park who wears his dad's wellingtons, stands at the cave mouth with his arms out as if he could hold back the sea by himself.

The tunnel is wet and the torch has one working battery. Halfway through, the water is at your knees and Dale's voice goes thin. You keep one hand on the rock and count the drips the way Bev taught you. At the far end there is a rusted lobster pot full of old pennies and a note in a handwriting you don't know that says well done, you lot. Nobody laughs. Then the gull comes swooping through the arch and everyone screams, and that is the funniest thing that has happened all year.

Back at the boarding house Mrs Pargeter tuts at the sand on the carpet, and over tea you tell it straight while the kettle sings. Dale says you made it up. You show him the penny. He pockets it without a word, and that night, on the back of the map, he writes a line under yours in careful capitals: PROBABLY TRUE.
