A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Dunmoor children had no money, so they had a map. Tamsin Pry found it folded inside a pasty tin in the drift at the top of the old Wheal Hope, its corners gone soft as cloth. A skull was drawn in the margin with a nail through one eye. Her brothers called it rubbish. Her grandmother, who had worked the lower levels as a girl before the water came in, said nothing. She put the kettle on and looked at the paper a long while.

They went down on the Saturday with string, two candles, dripping sandwiches wrapped in newspaper, and a dog called Mouse who would not go near the second shaft. The map led them past the pump house, under the chapel wall, and into a gallery where the rock sweated and rang when struck. Eli wanted to turn back at the first fall of stones. The little ones cried. Tamsin tied the string to an iron ring and said what her father always said in the shaft: never say die, and keep your hand on the wall.

They found no gold. They found a door of black timber, the hinges rusted to lace, and behind it a cellar where miners had chalked their names on slate. Some of the names were older than anyone in Dunmoor could read. At the end of the row, in a hand that wavered, someone had written the same motto under a crude skull, and beneath it a single date from the year the mine flooded.

They came up blackened and laughing at half past four, Mouse barking at the daylight. Their grandmother was on the step with the teapot. She took the map from Tamsin's hand and studied the skull for a long moment. Then she licked her thumb and rubbed at the nail through the eye until it came away. Tamsin asked if her great uncle had got out. Her grandmother poured the tea and said he had, and that was the whole of it.
