Vault Boy and devil on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Vault Boy figure in a blue jumpsuit with a yellow chest stripe grins and gives a thumbs up, with a small red devil peering over his shoulder. Two yellow banners reading DEAL WITH THE DEVIL frame the figure, with green banknotes scattered around the bottom and sides. Bold black outlines and flat areas of blue, yellow, red and green ink give it a classic cartoon look on the forearm.

He came up the lane on the first morning of the frost, red as a postbox and twice as cheerful, and asked whether I was the sort of man who wanted his name at the bottom of a page. Meg from the grain stores came out with her cart and her boy, and the boy, who is nine, took one look at the devil's tail and asked if he could have it for a lamp.

I signed, Ned, I will be honest. The terms were simple: one year of my luck in exchange for a bundle of notes thick enough to buy the whole valley, plus a thumbs up from the devil himself to seal it. The thumbs up is the worst part. Every time I pass the tavern wall and see that painted grin beside the old blue fellow, I know he is waiting for me to blink.

Come up at Michaelmas and bring your reading glasses. I want you to check the small print before I learn it by heart. Your brother, Alf.
