Old Tobias Renney had cut the same rose for forty years and never once finished it to his liking. The window was meant for St Eadric's at Hollin Bridge, a wheel of stone far too grand for a parish that could not afford it, so the vicar wrote to the county, and the county wrote back to say the money would come when the roof was sound. Tobias carved the tracery anyway, in his yard behind the cider press, one petal at a time, pale limestone set against the black of the shed wall.

His granddaughter Win carried the mallet for him that summer. She learned that a curve of stone is only as true as the arch it rests on, and that the medallion at the centre must be cut first or everything drifts off it. When the frost came she worked the chisel herself while he sat on an upturned crate, saying nothing, his eyes following the lines she made.
The rose was finished in November. The vicar came with his hat in his hands and stood a long time looking at it, then asked who had cut the centre. Tobias pointed at Win. The vicar said nothing about the money, only that the window would be set in the east end once the roof was mended, and that it would take the light there, pale over the dark, the way the old glass used to.
