Wildflowers and poppies on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows wheat stalks and cornflower heads rising diagonally up the forearm, with two large poppies at the lower end. The poppies are shaded with soft greys and fine hatching, while the flower heads and stalks use bold black outlines. Thin geometric triangle lines cross behind the flowers and frame the composition.

Dear Nell,

You asked me to stop fussing about the field and sign the papers, and I have, but not before Mr Quayle spent a whole Tuesday at the gate with his set squares and his little brass compass. He drew his triangles over our plan of Hobb's Rise as if the land were a puzzle he could square off, and I watched him from the porch with the kettle going cold behind me.
The wheat is high this year, higher than your grandfather ever got it. Cornflowers come up through it every June, blue as a gas flame, and the poppies crowd in at the bottom corner where the ground dips toward the beck. When we were first wed he used to cut a sheaf for the front room and tell me the poppies were the only honest thing a farmer grew, because they came for nothing and asked for nothing and left their seed to wait for next year.
So on Tuesday, when Quayle rolled up his plan, I went out with the scissors and took two poppy heads and a handful of blue, and I pressed them between the pages of the big Bible on the sideboard, at the Ruth chapter, where the gleaners are. They are brown and papery now, but the blue has held.
Don't sell the field on my account, love. Come up at harvest and bring the children, and we will cut the sheaf together.
Love, Gran
