Gramophone and cartoon dog on a calf

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A seated cartoon dog with large floppy ears sits beside a gramophone whose horn curls upward and fades into soft grey shading. The linework is clean and outlined, with grey shading on the horn, the gramophone base and the dog's body. The design is in black and grey on pale skin, with a plain light wall behind the leg and fabric of shorts at the top of the frame.

Sit closer, for the snow is coming over the top field and it'll be at the door before I'm finished. Nobody up at Brackenfold owned a gramophone but Jess Mallory. It had a brass horn as wide as a cartwheel, bent up at the top like a dog lifting its nose. Every night at six, with the stove banked, she wound it and the parlour filled with a dance band from some town none of us had seen.

The dog was called Tam. Black and white, all ears, with a face like a man who has heard the same joke twice. He would not go to bed until the record had run out. He sat on the rug square in front of that horn, head tipped to one side, listening as if someone inside the brass owed him an answer.

That autumn Tam's master went down to the valley for the last cattle sale and didn't come back up the track. Jess put the record on regardless. The band played, the needle hissed at the end, and Tam sat there with his ears down, waiting for the rest of the tune to come.

In February the power failed and the gramophone was the only thing in the house that still made a sound. Jess cranked it by hand in the dark, and the dog got up for the first time in weeks and wagged. Down the track a lantern came swinging through the drifts, and a man's voice was singing along to the tune, badly, the way he always had. Tam ran to the gate and sat down again in the snow, patient as a stone, and waited for the song to finish.
