The cart had reached the top of Scarrow Pass before Mrs Ogden noticed the bear trotting behind it, one paw raised as if he were hailing a taxi that had no intention of stopping. By then he had already eaten the end of her loaf, wrapped in a tea towel, and was licking crumbs from the tip of his nose with great dignity. She told him the cart was full. He told her he could see the back of it was empty, which was true, and that he had been waiting since breakfast for someone to notice his wave.

She tried to be firm. She said bears did not ride in carts, and that the last one who had tried had ended up in the Lowther vicarage pond. Dunstan considered this for a while, tufted head tilted, and then offered a trade. He would push the cart up the steep bit past the quarry if she let him sit on the tailboard for the downhill stretch. Mrs Ogden, who had a bad hip and a bad temper and a horse that would not pull uphill without help, said yes before she could think better of it.

At the summit he climbed down, shook the wind out of his ears, and sat on the drystone wall to look at the valley. He did not want to ride down after all. He only wanted to see the lake from up here, silver and small, and the church roof where the pond was. Mrs Ogden sat beside him and unwrapped the last of the cheese. They ate it in silence while the horse cropped grass, and when she stood to leave, Dunstan lifted one raised paw, the same wave he had been giving every cart since spring, and this time she waved back.
