Two profiles in a line-art frame on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two faces in profile, one overlapping the other, drawn as a continuous black outline inside a thin rectangular border. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or grey tones. The design is set centrally on the thigh, and the frame gives the composition a clean, contained shape against the skin and the grey background.

The lady in the tailor's window wanted her portrait done without the pencil ever leaving the paper, and she wanted her sister beside her, facing the other way, drawn by the same hand in the same breath. Nobody in Ramsgate had ever asked me for anything so foolish, which is why I took the commission and the twelve shillings in advance.

I sat on the step of the bandstand with the sketchbook on my knee and the wind pulling at the paper. Ruth Ashdown kept her chin up and her eyes fixed on the sea wall, while Vera glanced at the gulls as though they owed her money. Every time my line came near the other face I felt the old quarrel between them settle into the room, the one about a dress and a dance in 1938 that neither would name. So I let the line run across the join, over the bridge of a nose and round the curve of a cheek, and I did not lift the pencil once for forty minutes.
When I finished, the two faces looked out of one unbroken stroke, each cut from the other's outline, and I saw that I had drawn them as a single woman turning her head. Ruth studied it for a long time. Vera said it was a cheat. Then Ruth laughed, the first time I had heard her laugh, and asked for it framed in a thin black rule so the pair of them would stay put on the wall.
I still have the twelve shillings. I never spent them, because the frame was the only thing I lifted my pencil for, and I have thought since that the rule did more work than the drawing.
