Great white shark and fish tattoo on the back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A man lifts his dark t-shirt to show a large tattoo across his back and side. A great white shark with open jaws dominates the centre, surrounded by a school of fish in blue-green water. Soft shading gives the shark and fish a lifelike, three-dimensional look, with red and orange tones at the bottom of the design.

Gran Vera always said you could not trust a man who would not stand up in a boat, so when my brother Dennis asked me to give his wedding speech, I took it as a dare. The marquee was pitched on the harbour wall at Looe, the bride's family had strung blue lanterns along every rope they owned, and I had three cards and a glass of warm prosecco. I got as far as the first card before I started talking about the shark.

It was the summer we hauled pollack off the outer rocks, in a tub called Patience that leaked more than it floated. A great white came up under the stern, as long as the boat and grey as wet slate, and it hung there with its jaws parted as if it was waiting to be introduced. Shoals of mackerel poured around it in silver spirals. Dennis, who has never once backed down from anything with teeth, leaned over the gunwale and started talking to it. I have no idea what he said. The shark stayed for three hours, through two tea breaks and a squall, and only left when the fuel gauge gave out and we had to limp home.

Nobody believed us at the pub. Hannah, the bride, had heard the story a dozen times, and when I reached the end of it tonight she stood, lifted her glass and said the sea had picked him, and she was not going to argue with the sea. The whole marquee laughed, and Dennis gave me the look he used to give when we were boys and he had won an argument.

I put the cards in my pocket. Out past the harbour lights the water was dark and flat, and somewhere under it, I told myself, a school of fish was going about its business, paying no attention to any of us at all.
