Greek flag heart with evil eye charms on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A heart containing the blue and white stripes and cross of the Greek flag sits at the top of the design, with blue droplet shapes beneath it. A vertical chain of evil eye beads, a cross, a small heart and an anchor hangs down the side of the torso, outlined in grey with light blue and grey shading. The blue and white flag elements give the piece its main colour, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against bare skin.

Now sit closer, because the boarding house on the front at Kessock never let a sentence finish without a gust off the water, and you'll want to hear the end of this one. Mrs Papadakis kept it the year the pier lost its second railing, and she kept it with a broom in one hand and a string of blue beads in the other. Every guest who came up the steps got a long look over those beads. Some thought it rude. It was only that she was counting them, the way you count gulls to see if the weather's coming.

Her husband Yannis had gone back to Crete to bury his mother and had not come back, and his letters came smaller every month, folded into the same brown envelope. One night in October a lodger called Hal, a fishmonger's son who could not sit still, found her at the kitchen table scraping candle wax onto a saucer. He asked what the blue eyes were for. She said the eye watches so you don't have to, and the cross and the little heart are for the things it cannot watch.
He laughed, then stopped, because she had begun stitching a small anchor onto a cushion cover printed with the blue and white flag, and she did it without looking at her needle, the way you'd breathe. Hal kept quiet and handed her the thread.
In the morning the post came. Yannis was on the boat from Piraeus, and the letter said so in handwriting that did not shrink at all. Mrs Papadakis put down the broom and went to the window, and that was when the whole street saw her smile.
