Greek word lettering on the hand

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single word in black Greek lettering tattooed across the back of a hand, running diagonally from the wrist towards the knuckles. The strokes are thin and slightly uneven, with some soft shading at the edges of the letters. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the plain background fills the frame with blurred fabric at the bottom.

Sit down, all of you, and stop looking at the door. The bread will not run off, and the lamb has waited longer than the groom. The village said his sweets were sound. The almond cakes were sweet enough and the honey was never thin, but his father used to stand at the back of the bakehouse with his arms folded and say that a thing made without meraki is only a thing. Nobody in the village could say what that word was made of. Thanasis could not say either, so he went up the hill with a sack of flour and a lamp and worked the dough until the cockerels started.

He rolled the koulouria for the wedding one by one, pressing the same loop into the same thick rope, and each time he thought of the bride and the long table and the faces he had known since boyhood. Near dawn the priest's wife came up the path with her basket, tasted one ring, and said nothing at all. Then she held out her hand for another.

When the bride's mother was told this, she laughed and said meraki could not be bought from a shop or taught by a father. It was only what was left in your hands after you had stopped trying to be good at something and simply cared. So eat. Taste the bread, and if you find a little of him in it, do not tell me you did not.
