You had lost the argument so often that you had stopped keeping score, which is why you were almost annoyed when Tomas stood up before the vows and pulled a folded card from his breast pocket. He had drawn the infinity sign himself, badly, the lines wobbling where his hand had shaken, and beside it he had written the words in joined-up capitals that ran off the edge. He read them slowly, the way he read contracts, pausing for breath. Then he looked at you over his glasses and said, "I win."

You took the card from his hand and turned it over. On the back, in your own handwriting from a bus timetable scrap three weeks earlier, was the answer you had planned.
