Infinity symbol with names and red heart on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo is a black infinity loop with a red outlined heart sitting in its upper left curve. The names Ethan and Jacob are written in black script along the loop, one on each side. The linework is solid and even, and the red outline is the only colour against the black, on pale skin photographed against a dark surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

There was a rope in the Scarrow Pit that nobody could find the end of. The old men said the first sinkers had laid it down, a black hawser that ran from the cage shaft through every seam and came back up at the far end of the field, and anyone who held it would never be lost underground. Ethan Pryce and his brother Jacob were the only boys in the village who believed it, because their father had told them so the week before the cage stopped turning.

They took a stub of red chalk from the lamp-room and drew a heart on the whitewashed wall of the bank. Then they tied the rope round their wrists and looped it twice, so it lay in the shape the schoolmaster had chalked on his board for forever, lying on its side. Ethan went first with the lamp, and Jacob kept one hand on his brother's coat, and they walked into the north level singing the pit hymn to keep their feet steady.

When the roof came down behind them, Jacob was on the wrong side of the fall. Ethan held the rope and felt it tug, then slacken, then tug again. He walked it in the dark, calling his brother's name, and every time he was sure he had come to its end he found the loop again, and the red chalk heart smeared under his thumb. On the third day he heard a tapping come through the stone, slow and patient, the way a man knocks when he has been counting.

They came up at the far end of the field in the grey of the morning, Jacob with chalk on his palm and Ethan with the rope still knotted round his wrist. The village still says that if you go looking for the end of a rope, you will find the same knot twice, and that the miners who keep their word to each other are never really lost.
