Dear Nell, the plums are coming down faster than Dad can gather them, so I've given up and let the wasps have the lower branches. You'll think I've lost my mind, but on Tuesday a bird came into the orchard that I couldn't put a name to. Green as new bracken on top, blue underneath where the light caught it, and a tail longer than the bird itself, all loops and ribbon.

It didn't land. It hung over the old Victoria tree the way a kite hangs when the wind has let go of it, wings thrown up as if somebody had told it to stop and it hadn't quite agreed. Then it dropped its head and looked straight at me through the ladder rungs. I swear it was deciding whether I was worth the trouble.

Mr Harrow from the next farm says it escaped from the travelling menagerie that came through Hadley in June, and I said that was nonsense, because the menagerie only had a camel and two goats. He says I'm too fond of stories. Perhaps I am. But I kept the tail feather it left behind on the gatepost, a blue-black curl with a green eye at the end, and I've pressed it between the pages of Mother's recipe book, where it can keep the gooseberry jam company.
