Flowing phoenix line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised phoenix or bird is drawn in bold black outline, with its head turned to the left and a crest of pointed plumes. Its wings and tail sweep up and down the frame as long, tapering feather shapes, with the tail trailing to the bottom right. The drawing uses black ink only on a plain white background, with no shading, and the composition is a single tall, flowing figure.

The last train had already gone when the bird came down through the glass roof of platform four, and you were the only one left to see it, sweeping the floor with a broom worn down to the wire. It did not land so much as unfold, a long tail of feathers trailing across the wet tiles like ink running down a page. Its crest was sharp as a fishhook. Somewhere above the clock a loudspeaker announced a delay to a service that no longer existed.

You had been told as a boy that the phoenix burned, that the ash became an egg and the egg became a bird again. Nobody mentioned the cold. The creature shivered on the bench beside the ticket machine, feathers standing away from its body in tapering blades, and it looked at you the way the signal lamps look at a driver, steady and asking for nothing. You fetched the flask from your locker and poured the tea into its lid. It drank without thanks, which seemed fair.

At first light the cleaners arrived with their trolleys, and you expected them to shriek. Instead they walked around the bench as if it had always been there, as if every station kept a bird on a bench at dawn. When the first northbound pulled in, the phoenix rose in one slow sweep, lifting over the platform edge and out past the footbridge, its tail the last thing to clear the girders.

You stood with the empty flask and noticed the departures board had a new line on it, written in your own hand, for tomorrow.
