Green butterfly with bubbles on a foot
Neo-trad · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A stylised butterfly with green wings, pale highlights and a purple body is tattooed on the side of a foot, with three small blue bubbles rising above the left wing and one beside the right wing. The design uses bold dark outlines and smooth shading within each wing. The composition is centred on the foot, with a dark background behind it.

The cider press had been dry since June, so when the butterfly lifted out of the trough, you assumed the rain barrel had been overflowing again. Mrs Pritchard's Bramleys were dropping in the long grass, and wasps had already found the first split windfall. You were supposed to be counting baskets, not watching a green insect climb out of the water with three bubbles clinging to its shoulder like beads.

It rose over the bottom row, wings the colour of a pear skin held up to the light, and a bubble came loose from it each time it beat. They drifted down and burst on the nettles. Mr Pritchard had told you the orchard was older than the house, and that his father swore the trees drank from a spring under the hill that nobody could find on a map.
You followed it to the old gate, where the trunk of the last Cox had split in two. Inside the split something glinted: a tin cup, a lid, a row of small glass marbles, all wet. The butterfly settled on the rim of the cup and folded its wings, and its purple body pulsed like a seed. The marbles were cold as a spring at dawn, and the bubbles rising from the wood fizzed against your palm.
By the time the wasps had gone to sleep, you had filled four baskets and carried the cup back up the lane. Every few steps a bubble broke near your ear with a sound like someone saying your name. You never did find the spring. The next September the butterfly came back to the trough, and this time you left the lid off on purpose.
