Back · Colour · Photo

A green hummingbird with a long beak, large cartoon eyes and outstretched wings is shown in flight. The bird is outlined with bold dark-teal linework and filled with soft green and pink shading, with lighter highlights on the wings. The design sits centred on the skin with plenty of plain space around it.

The old folk in the village said a hummingbird that came back to the schoolroom it had learned in would not leave until each child there had told the truth about the thing they had been sent out for. That was how the story went when Edie Marsh told it at the bar, and she had been sent out for talking.

So they went round the tables with their name badges and their paper plates. Peter Groves admitted he had let the frog out. Margaret Lowe admitted the spelling test was hers, not the dog's. The bird hovered over the squash jug, wings going like a sewing machine, and sipped at the orange rim each time someone finished.

When the last of them had spoken, the bird dipped its long beak once towards the piano, where Miss Vane's handbag still hung from the lid, and went out through the window into the evening. Someone finally cut the sponge. It was dry, and everybody ate it anyway.
