The carter's daughter had left her mule at the cairn when the green giant came down through the pass, his hair lit blue like sheet lightning caught in wet wool. Nobody in Hallowmere had seen him in forty winters. The old men said he slept under the scree, and that a fist raised against the valley would wake him.

Tamsin Rook did not believe it. She climbed the pass with a sack of salt and a loaf for her uncle at the high hut, and when the giant rose from the bracken she saw his teeth first, bared in a grin that was more grief than threat. He reached for her with one knuckled hand, slowly, the way a man reaches for a coin he has dropped down a well.

Her grandmother had told her that a hand which comes toward you is either hungry or empty. Tamsin set the salt on his palm. His fingers closed round the sack like a child's, and the flames in his hair guttered down to a low violet glow.

He carries the salt still, they say, up and down the pass in all weathers. Where he walks the ewes lie down without fear, and on the rare clear evenings the valley folk see him stop by the cairn, look back toward Hallowmere, and raise his hand, open, as if to say he has not forgotten what was given.
