The Joker grinning through torn skin

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold, full-colour tattoo of the Joker character with a wide, toothy grin, green swept-back hair and yellow-green eyebrows. The face is rendered in purple and grey with heavy shading, and it appears to tear through a layer of skin shown in green, yellow and red. A small speech bubble reading HA sits in the lower left corner. The design is framed against the skin, with the photo taken straight on in soft daylight.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band had got as far as the third chorus of Moonlight Over Morecambe when the man in the purple waistcoat came through the fire door, and nobody at the Palace Ballroom thought to stop him, because he was laughing so hard he had to hold on to the frame. Now, you'll want to know what he wanted, and I'll tell you, though he never said it straight. He went round the floor asking every couple the same thing, which was whether they knew what time it was. Alfie Cotterill, who sold pies off a barrow outside the doors, checked his pocket watch to be helpful and got a faceful of confetti for his trouble.

The ballroom floor had been sanded thin by ninety years of feet, and the next morning the caretaker found a long green streak across the boards, as if something had dragged itself out through the grain and thought better of it. Nobody could say what it was. Lily Marsh, who ran the cloakroom and never once in her life told a lie she could avoid, swore that the grin was still there on the wall by the stage, painted in a few quick strokes of ochre that nobody remembered buying paint for. She said the teeth had been wet.

The hall shut in the autumn and the band went on to other towns. Alfie still sells his pies. When the wind comes in off the bay and the old doors rattle in their frames, he says he can hear someone at the fire exit, still laughing at the wrong moment, waiting for a waltz to begin again.
