Character portrait in top hat on calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A detailed portrait of a smiling character with orange hair, wearing a green top hat with a pink band and a patterned bow tie. The face and hat are shaded with smooth, blended tones, and the hat has fine detail on its surface and a small card tucked into the band. Vivid greens, pinks and oranges sit against a bright green background, and the portrait fills the frame with the edge of the skin visible around it.

The last of the Pippin apples had gone soft in the grass by the time you reached the gate, and the hatter was already sitting on the wall with a tin of pins across his knees, as though he had been expecting a customer for a week. You could smell the windfalls rotting sweetly under the trees. He did not look up. He was threading a card into the band of a green top hat, a card with a number inked on it in a hand far too neat for the rest of him.

'Ten and six,' he said, 'and not a penny more, for a hat that remembers where it has been.' You paid him in apples, because he would not take coin from the orchard folk, and he turned the hat over and showed you the lining, where someone had stitched a map of every field you had ever run through barefoot. Your finger found the place where the lane bends past the cider press. He tapped the pink silk band twice, and the hat settled onto your head as if it had always meant to be there.
Late August went strange after that. The wasps stopped stinging and started humming in a key you almost knew. Every tree you passed had a small brass key hanging from one branch, and the wind rang them like a shop bell. You walked the rows until the light turned the colour of marmalade, looking for the stile you had climbed in June, and you found it only when you stopped trying.
When you came down through the yard the next morning, the hat was on the hook by the back door with a fresh card in the band. It bore the same number as before, only turned sideways, and beneath it, in pencil, someone had written: now you owe him one more afternoon.
