Kestrel had stopped counting the bends in the river when the drums started up behind them, low and uneven, as if the forest itself were clearing its throat. Tobiah Renn dragged the tin case closer to his chest and told himself it was only rain on the canopy. Ahead, Pell was already wading into the reeds with his machete held low, the way the old surveyor had taught them, blade first, eyes on the ground.

The path took them under a fallen ceiba, its split trunk furred with moss, and there was the man who had been following them since the landing stage. He came down off the bank in one long stride, a band of black knotwork across his shoulder like a yoke, his scalp shaved except for a ridge of hair stiff with clay. He carried a short blade in his right hand and a leather belt slung across his chest, heavy with pouches that clinked. He did not shout. He did not need to.

Renn had the case, the plates inside wrapped in oilcloth, the only survey of the upper Ossa that anyone in Lisbon would ever pay for. He had told Pell it was worth a dozen men. Now he understood how foolish that sounded in a place where nobody had heard of Lisbon.

Pell stopped and set down his machete slowly, then lifted both hands. The warrior took one more step, looked at the case, then at Renn's boots, and tilted his head toward the river. Renn left the case on the log. The man crouched, lifted the lid with the tip of his blade and went through the plates one by one, humming, as if sorting fish. He folded the sheet showing the river's bends into his belt, then melted back into the green as quietly as he had come, and the rain closed over the place where he had stood.
