The snow reached the hut's lower step on Tuesday, so I have been reading your old almanac by the stove and counting the days you said you would be back. Eleven now. The mule man came up the Kessel track with flour and news that the bridge at Varra has gone, which means the post will be late, which means you will think I have forgotten you. I have not. I found a clover this morning, of all things, growing out of a crack in the scree below the cairn where nothing should grow at this height.

It had four leaves, and the stem bent over like a question mark, as if it had been searching for something and given up halfway. I pressed it between two pages of the almanac, the page for the month you left, and I have been thinking that one leaf more is a bad sort of luck. Your grandmother always said you should give a lucky thing away, or it goes sour in the pocket.

So I am sending it to you with this letter, though the courier will charge me for the weight. If it reaches you pressed flat, you will know it is the one from the pass. If it arrives crushed, you can say the mountain took its tax. Come home by the thaw. The stove needs feeding and I have run out of things to say to the goat.
