Four-leaf clover and swirls on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A four-leaf clover in shades of green sits at the centre of a delicate design with curling, swirling stems and a small leaf. Dots trail alongside the linework, which is thin and smooth with soft green shading in the leaves. The design wraps diagonally up the ankle against a dark grey background.

Nobody in Carrowmore thought it odd that Brid Lennon kept a jar of clover on the schoolhouse windowsill, though Mr Halloran said it was a waste of a good jar. She picked only the ones with four leaves, and she never said where she found them, only that the wind told her. The wind swept the lane below the chapel in long green curls every evening after the bell.

The winter the quarry boys came to the school, Brid counted the jar and found it one short. A boy named Tadhg Costello had taken the fourth leaf to press in his copybook, because he wanted to be lucky at sums. Brid did not shout. She walked him down the lane at dusk and showed him where the stems ran wild, how they curled back on themselves like a question nobody answered, and how the little seeds came loose in the grass after every rain.
"Plant what you take," she said, "or the lane will remember."
Forty years on, the reunion was held in the same hall with its cracked tiles and bad tea. After the speeches, Tadhg, grey and stooped, walked out to the lane and stopped. The clovers ran in a loose line up the wall, every stem curling into a swirl, and in the middle of each one a four-leaf clover stood open to the evening. He understood then that luck was a thing a man could grow back, if he was patient enough to wait for it.
