Geometric clover on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small three-leaf clover is tattooed on the forearm, drawn with fine black lines. Each leaf is split into angular facets with radiating lines, and a single stem runs down from the base. The ink is black on pale skin, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the design.

Sit closer, the wind off the bog takes half of what I say. You want the cold part first? Then listen. Up on the ridge stands Carrow Keep, four walls and no roof, and the last thing anyone did inside it was count the windows. Old Dunmore the glazier counted them every morning for thirty winters, because the lord who paid him had sworn each pane would be leaded in clear glass before the feast of Saint Brigid.

He never finished. The lead ran short in the hard frost, and the last lattice of the east window stayed a hole where the light came through in fans, cut into sections by nothing but the bars of stone. Dunmore walked down to the valley with his tools and his debts and never climbed back. Yet every spring, so the shepherds swear, a clover came up through the sill of that empty frame, three leaves, each one split into facets like the panes he would have set, with veins running out from the stalk as neat as a surveyor's chalk.
Here is the turn. A girl from the village, Maeve Tully, who had a good eye and no money, took a knife to the stone one March and scratched the same pattern into the sill beside the clover, so the lines would hold the rain. Her mother called it foolishness. The lord's heirs laughed. But the next spring the clover had crept along the whole wall, and the frost, for the first time in a century, stayed out of the keep.
