Green leaf tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large, outlined leaf with three lobes sits on the forearm, with a central pale green boss surrounded by small white dots. The leaf is filled with green shading that fades to orange and yellow at the edges, with darker veins drawn through each lobe. The photo is taken straight on, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame and a grey shirt and dark trousers visible at the edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on Saltergate market since before light, and by eleven the cloth awnings sagged like wet sails. Maud Pell sold cabbages and nothing else, because her father had said a thing done well is a thing done once. A boy came past without a coat and stopped at her board, staring at the cabbages as if they owed him money.

"Have you a leaf for a cold heart?" he asked. She didn't laugh. She lifted a cabbage leaf from the top of the pile and found beneath it a green leaf she had never seen, three-lobed and notched at the edges like something bitten, with a pale knot at its centre and small white beads of rain sitting along its veins. Her father would have known what it was. Maud only knew it was dry, and everything else on the board was soaked through.

She gave it to him. He tucked it inside his shirt and walked off down the wet cobbles, and the stalls on either side of his path steamed and dried for a yard, the orange at the edges of the leaf spreading through the grey until the whole square smelled of late October.

Next morning there was a single leaf pinned under her scale weight, green at the heart and gold at the lobes. The rain had stopped. Nobody had seen the boy again, and Maud did not go looking for him, but she kept the weight on the board all winter.
