Succulent cluster on a lower leg
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of three succulents, with two rosette plants in green and yellow-green at left and centre and a bluish-grey rosette at the lower right, plus spiky upper leaves. The linework is soft and the leaves are shaded with smooth gradients to suggest volume. Pink and magenta edges on the leaves add contrast against the green and blue body colour, set against a dark, plain background.

Nobody in Hollin Vale bought plants. You grew what the wind let you, and the wind came off the spoil heap and took most of it. Nan's were different. She kept three rosettes in a chipped brown pot on the back sill, sage and butter-green, with pink lines along their edges as if someone had gone over them with a fine nib, and a blue-grey one she called the Sunday plant because that was the only day she gave it a drop.

My grandad had worked the face at Number Four for thirty-one years and came home each night grey to the eyebrows. He said the cough was the mine's and the rest was his own fault for smoking. Nan said succulents keep what they need inside their leaves, which was the most sensible thing she ever told me, and that a plant which could go a month without a drink had no business being fussy about a bit of soot.
When the pit closed, the men stood about the bottom of the lane for a week not knowing what to do with their hands. Grandad sat on the front step and did nothing at all. Nan walked out to the spoil heap with a trowel and came back with a spiky cutting that had found a crack where nothing should grow, and she set it in the pot beside the others without a word about it.
Years later I lifted the Sunday plant out to repot it. Its roots were a white knot the shape of a fist. I broke off a rosette, pressed it into damp grit on my own windowsill in the city, and forgot about it for a month. It has put out three new heads since. On Sundays I water it and keep the rest of the week to myself, the way she did.
