Green starfish on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large starfish with five arms curls across the outer upper arm, with its arms spreading toward the shoulder and elbow. The linework is soft and the shading gives the body and arms a raised, rounded look, with pale yellow and orange dots along each arm. The tattoo is in mostly green ink, set against the skin and a green sparkly fabric at the left edge of the frame.

The rain had been falling on Tallow Quay since before the boats came in, and Ada Penrose was still sorting crabs under the striped awning when the star came up in the net. It was the size of a dinner plate, green as a bottle held to the light, and it clung to the mesh with all five arms as if it had already decided the matter.

The fishmongers said throw it back. Old Tobin said a sea star that green was a sign of nothing good, and that a thing so stubborn would only come back to trouble the stalls. Ada did not argue. She carried it in both hands through the market, past the cheese man's dripping canvas and the flower seller who was grieving over a bucket of wet sweet peas, and she knelt at the edge of the slipway where the tide was turning.
She set it on the wet stone. For a long while the star did not move. Then one arm lifted, curled round the rim of her wrist, and let go, and she felt the cold of it leave her skin like a question being answered. Rain ran off the awnings in strings. Down the quay the tide-clock rang the half hour, and the water took the star back without a ripple.
When Ada returned to her stall, her crab tray was full of rainwater and her ledger was ruined, but there was a single orange speck on her thumb that would not wash off. Every market day after, the boats brought in more fish than the sea had any right to spare, and Tobin never again said a word about green things in the net.
