Gold and teal glitter Eye of Horus design on the upper arm of a person wearing a white top.

Eye of Horus glitter tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A close view of an upper arm with an Eye of Horus motif drawn in gold and turquoise glitter. The linework is smooth and continuous, with the gold outline and the teal inner curl giving the eye its shape. The shallow depth of field blurs a patterned top and the person's torso in the background.

The gilder's pots are already open when you reach the workshop on the Sekhet quay, and the glue has gone tacky in the heat. Master Ankhet does not look up. She lifts a brush from the water jar, shakes it once, and points it at the prow of the reed barge drawn up on the mud. "Eyes first," she says. "A boat that cannot see the sandbanks will not be a boat for long."

You kneel on the hull and work the gold outline in one unbroken stroke, the way she taught you, lifting the bristles only at the brow. Then comes the turquoise, ground from the blue stone the wadi traders bring down every spring and mixed with fish glue until it holds. The inner curl is the hard part. Too thick and it swallows the gold; too thin and the river takes it in a single flood. You learn to breathe out slowly while you paint, as if the eye might flinch.

Every spring the water takes half of what you made the autumn before, so the eyes are never finished, only renewed. Ankhet says this is the whole craft. You scrape the old flakes from the wood with a bronze blade, and gold dust drifts off your wrist and settles in the creases of your knuckles, catching the low sun whenever you move your hand.

The barge leaves at dusk with its new eye glinting at the water. You stand on the quay until it is only a bright point on the current, then you notice the gold still on your fingers, and you rub at them, and it will not come off.
