Green viper and red rose on the back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A realistic green snake with a detailed scaled head and an orange-red eye coils diagonally across the centre of the image, its forked tongue extended. Below it, a red rose with green leaves and thorny stems sits near the bottom edge, and purple cylindrical shapes appear at the top against dark grey smoke. Smooth blended shading and vivid colour give the scales and petals a strong three-dimensional look.

The viper had been sleeping in the rose hedge behind Old Maud's gate since the thaw, and the children were told to go round by the mill path. Nobody in Hollin Edge had ever seen it strike anyone. They had seen it lift its head at the bell, and they had seen its green go gold in the evening, the way the bracken did before frost.

Tobias Ferrow came up from the valley in the third week of May with a sack of salt on his shoulder and no patience for warnings. He was going to the smokehouse at the forest's edge, where the Dunning sisters cured bacon and sold tallow candles dyed purple with bramble juice. They owed him four shillings. He meant to collect before dark.

He did not take the mill path. He cut through the hedge where the roses grew thickest, and the thorns took a strip from his sleeve. When he looked up, the viper lay across the gatepost, its tongue tasting the smoke rolling from the chimney. It did not move. It only regarded him with an eye the colour of a coal that had not yet decided to die.

Tobias stood still until the sun slid behind the ridge. Then he set the salt down, very slowly, and said the only thing his grandmother had ever taught him about snakes, which was that they could be owed the same courtesy as a creditor. The viper turned its head. The smoke thinned. In the morning the Dunning sisters found four shillings on their step, and a red rose laid across the coins, its petals already dark with dew.
