Rose made from rolled banknotes on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose is rendered from rolled and torn banknotes, with partial denominations such as 100 visible across the paper. The shading is greyscale, using soft gradients for the petals and crisp dark edges for the torn paper. The design wraps across the outer forearm against a brick wall background.

Ines had been rolling banknotes at the counter of the Vallon Bridge exchange hut since six, and by eleven the rose was the size of a side plate. Her uncle called it the only honest thing in the building. Travellers came in to swap francs and pesetas for sterling and left with a paper flower, which she had decided was a fair price for a bad exchange rate.

Tomas, a lorry driver with a parking ticket folded in his shirt pocket, leaned on the glass and tapped the torn edge of the outer petal, where a hundred showed through the paper. He said his daughter collected anything with a number on it and offered her twenty euros. Ines said the rose was not for sale. She had made it from money that had passed through forty hands at the bridge that week, and every one of those hands had left a crease.
When he came back for it after his inspection, she had already unpicked the centre fold to check the tension. Inside, on the back of a twenty, someone had written in pencil: Safe over, Pilar. Ines had found the note in a bundle from a coach party in the spring and had kept it in the drawer ever since, not sure whether to throw it away or send it on. Tomas read it twice, then said the handwriting was his mother's. Ines wrapped the rose in a clean bag and handed it over. He set it on the dashboard of the cab, petals rolled tight around a stranger's words, and pulled away into the lights of the customs lane.
