Blindfolded Lady Justice across a full back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers most of the back, showing a blindfolded female figure with long flowing hair and dark feathered wings. She holds a sword in one hand and a set of balance scales in the other, with draped fabric wrapping her body. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients, heavy blacks and highlights that give the figure depth and movement.

Mrs Okonedo had kept the scales on the ninth floor since the council stopped sending anyone to fix the lift, and every Thursday the neighbours carried their quarrels up the stairs to her, because she was the only one who never looked at who was holding the bag of shopping. She sat with her back to the window, a strip of old linen over her eyes, and listened.

The dispute that week was about a cat. Teodor from flat 42 said the grey tom belonged to the flats below and had been eating his bins, and Ivy from 38 said the cat had never been fed by anyone who wasn't her. Mrs Okonedo weighed each word in the air with her left hand, the sword laid across her knees like a ruler. When the pans tipped, they tipped slowly, the way wings lift before a bird decides to fly. Neither of them liked the answer, which Ivy said later was how she knew it was fair.
On the last Thursday of winter a boy came up alone, no older than eleven, carrying a carrier bag with something heavy in it. He said he had come to accuse his father of taking the heating money and lying about it. Mrs Okonedo did not ask him to sit. She asked what his father had said, then what he had said, then waited until the silence grew long enough to hurt. The boy began to cry, and she lowered the scale until it balanced his tears against the coins.
When he left, the pans were level, and she lifted the linen for the first time in years to watch the stairwell light come up through the window glass. Nobody on the estate ever learned what she had weighed that night. They only noticed the lift was working again by morning.
