Winged skull figure across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece shows a hooded skeletal figure with a skull-like face, one finger raised to its lips, with a ribbon banner across its lower body. Feathered wings with rows of eyes spread out from both shoulders and reach onto the upper arms. The work uses soft greyscale shading, with smooth gradients on the bones and fabric and fine detail in the feathers, set against a hazy background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has been falling since Tuesday and the Carrow Arms has run out of everything except candles. You come down the back stairs at three in the morning with your boots in your hand, because the landlady asked you not to wake the other guests, and find the ledger open on the bar. Someone has written your name in it, in a hand you do not recognise, and beneath it a single line: told the stranger about your brother. Under that, a second line in the same ink. Eyes counted.

The publican's wife, Ada, is stacking glasses with her back to you. "Don't read that out loud," she says, without turning round. "The vestry carving. You'll have seen it, the one with the wings. Folk say each feather has an eye and each eye keeps a tally of what gets said under this roof. Hush is what they call him. He doesn't mind a bit of chat. It's the telling that costs you."

You think of the man by the fire on Sunday, the one who listened with his hood up while you talked about the debts, the sale of the farm, your brother's name. He left before the storm, and you assumed he had gone out to his car. Now the snow is so thick the churchyard has vanished, all but the lychgate, and the candle flames lean towards the glass as if something on the other side were breathing.

Ada slides a clean cloth across the bar and nods at the ledger. The line about your brother has been ruled through in neat black strokes, and beneath it someone has drawn a finger pressed to a mouth. You press your own finger to your lips, the way the carved figure does, and feel the cold leave the room. By dawn the road is ploughed. You don't mention the stranger to anyone on the way to Ashby, and nobody asks you to.
