Grinning clown heads flash sheet

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A sheet of nine clown heads arranged across a black background, each with exaggerated teeth, wild hair, and a red or dark nose. The linework is bold with heavy black shading and white highlights that give the faces a glossy, three-dimensional finish. Five-pointed stars and small dots fill the gaps, and the composition is dense and balanced across the page.

The snow had shut the Harrowgate road by four, and by nine the only guests left at the Coldharbour Inn were the nine painted faces above the bar, which Mrs Penrose swore she had never hung. I had come up from Leeds to settle my late uncle's accounts, not to be grinned at by a row of clowns in greasy frames. Still, the fire was good and the landlord's stew was better than it had any right to be, so I stayed where I was.

Around midnight I noticed the stars. Someone had painted them in the gaps between the frames, five points each, and the white highlights on the clowns' cheeks seemed brighter than the candle could account for. The one with the bowler hat had shifted its grin a quarter inch to the left. I told myself it was the drink. Then the heavy-browed one by the stairs winked, slowly, the way a man does when he is about to tell you a joke you will regret hearing.

Mrs Penrose came in with a lamp and found me standing on a chair with my sleeve pushed up, looking at the sheet of paper my uncle had left under the till. It was a flash design, nine heads on black, and in the corner in his cramped hand he had written: Do not take the one with the teeth. I looked up. The clown with the wild grey hair and the dark nose was gone from the wall. Only a clean rectangle of wallpaper remained, and on my forearm, beneath the sleeve, a small red nose was beginning to shine.
