Gothic castles inside a skull drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black and grey ink drawing of a human skull. Gothic castle silhouettes fill the eye sockets and nasal cavity, with pine trees along the left edge and tombstones and a cross set among the teeth. The fine hatching and heavy black areas create strong contrast, and the skull fills the frame with the scenes arranged inside its bony forms.

The mule refused the ice at the third bend of Carrow Pass, so Agnes Mollison unslung the lantern, tied the rope twice round her wrist, and went up on foot with the wind pushing snow into her collar. The inn at the summit had a light in one window only. Old Tobias Reave opened the door before she knocked, as if he had been counting her steps up the slope.

He kept his dead father's skull on the mantel, polished to the colour of tallow. When he lifted it to the lamp, the eye sockets filled with towers. There were three spires in the left socket, grey and sharp against a sky that was not the sky in the room, and a bridge of arches in the right. Tobias said his father had surveyed the pass for the Crown and had sworn that Vellan Castle stood on the far side of the ridge, though no survey had ever found it. Pines ran down the edge of the skull's cheek like a row of mourners.

She slept badly. In the morning the churchyard below the inn showed forty-one stones through the thinning snow, and when she counted the teeth in the skull, grinning from the mantel, there were forty-one as well. A small iron cross sat wedged in the hollow of the nose, where no one had put it.

Before she left, she turned the skull to face the road home. The sockets were only sockets now, dark and ordinary, and the far ridge was just a grey wall with snow on it. She set a coin on the step beside the door, took the lantern, and went down the way she had come.
