Snarling bear paw design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey drawing of a bear paw print, with a snarling bear's head and open jaws filling the pad. Each toe is shaped like a claw and contains shaded detail, including a skull in the upper toe. The work uses dense shading and fine hatching for texture, set against a plain white background.

The bear came down from the ruined keep the week after the bells were taken, and it walked into Harrow's market as if it had paid for the place. Nobody shut a door. Old Tamsin the cooper said later that she had only wanted to see its feet, because everyone had heard the stories about the lord who kept it, and she had never believed a beast could have toes that long.

The lord of Greyhallow had been dead two hundred years, but his bargain had outlived him. He had promised his people safety from the raiders in exchange for one thing each generation, and the bear was the thing that collected. Each claw on its paw had a little world scratched into it: a hayfield, a river at flood, a face Tamsin recognised as her grandmother's. The skull sat high in the top toe where the lord had kept his oath. When the bear opened its jaws the whole valley smelled of wet slate.
Tamsin did not run. She took a bolt of linen from her cart and laid it on the cobbles, the way her mother had taught her to lay out a shroud, and she said the name of the first lord aloud. The bear stopped. It looked at the linen, then at her, and the hatching on its muzzle seemed to soften, as if someone had rubbed the ink with a thumb.
It went back up the hill that evening. The next morning the skull in the toe had a new line of shading beside it, very fine, no longer than a thread, and in it Tamsin could just make out her own name. The valley kept its bargain, and Tamsin kept the linen.
