Hope script tattoo on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A side view shows the word Hope written in black script across the side of the torso, just below the arm. The linework is smooth and fairly bold, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo, with the subject's face and head out of frame.

Mr Ashdown had the last of the gold leaf on his brush when the rain started again, so he swore, blew on the size and carried on regardless. Nobody in Hollin Bridge had ever seen him hurry a letter. He painted the name of the chemist's shop over the door, the butcher's prices in red on the glass, and the hymn numbers for the chapel board, all in the same slanting hand his father had taught him with a ruler and a jar of ink.

The commission that spring came from Edie Pryor, who kept the bakery on Fenn Street with her two boys in khaki and no word from either since Korea. She didn't want a name over the door. She wanted one word painted small on the inside of the bakery window, low down, where the children stood to press their noses against the cakes. 'Hope,' she said, and nothing else. 'Something they'll see when they come in for the bread. Something that doesn't need explaining.'
He wrote it three times on brown paper before he was satisfied, the loops joined so the H leaned on the o like a man resting his arm on a gate. Then he painted it reversed on the glass, so it read true from the pavement and backwards from the shop, and he kept his hand steady for the whole length of the stroke.
Edie paid him in two loaves and a shilling he tried to refuse. Years later, when the window had gone to cracks and the bakery had become a launderette, a boy came in asking for the man who wrote the word on the glass. Mr Ashdown was dead by then, but the boy said the letters were still there under the new paint, the way a thing shows through when you know where to look.
