Guitar, skulls and roses across a back
Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large back piece centres on a purple electric guitar with its neck running vertically, flanked by three grey shaded skulls and pink roses. Feathered wings rise behind the guitar, and two banners carry the words Where words fail and music speaks. The bold outlines and shading sit against a soft teal wash, with the grey work in black and grey and the guitar and roses in colour.

The purple paint has worn pale along the lower bout where years of bars and bus stations have rubbed against it. He finds only a spare set of strings and a crumpled setlist from a club in Brno that closed in March. He reads it twice. Then he asks, in a language you half-speak, whether the thing can still make a sound.
You tune it by ear, the old way, leaning toward the window where the wind worries at the flags. The first chord rings out wrong and then right. Behind the glass a queue of lorry drivers goes quiet, and the wall clock ticks beside a poster of a lighthouse nobody has looked at in years. You play the one song your father taught you, the slow one with no words, and the officer's shoulders drop by a fraction.
He stamps your passport without looking at the photograph. "Some things," he says, handing it back, "do not need translating." You close the case on the purple body and walk out into the snow with the last note still humming in the cold air behind you.
