Hair dryer design with heart cord
Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn outline of a hair dryer with a cloud of air blowing from its nozzle. Small four-point sparkles surround the design, and the cord loops across the lower half before ending in a heart. The drawing uses grey pencil shading and dark dotted detail on the nozzle, set on a pale paper background.

The dryer in Nessa's salon had been dying since spring, and everyone on Lark Street knew it because it sounded like a kettle with a grudge. Her customers came in regardless. Mrs Pargeter wanted her set every Thursday, and the Dunmore twins arrived on Saturdays to argue about whose turn it was to sit under the hood.

The cord was the real problem. It reached the far basin and no further, so Nessa had spent a whole winter looping it over the mirror frame, across the lino, and round the leg of the shampoo trolley. Her grandson Teo, who was nine and believed in engineering, fitted a new plug one wet Sunday. He bent the end of the flex into a heart with a strip of red insulation tape, because he said a plug ought to look like it meant it.
On Monday the dryer breathed its warm cloud across the tinsel someone had hung in the window in July, and the shop smelled of toast and hairspray. Mrs Pargeter said it was the best set she'd had in years. Nessa said nothing. She was watching the little heart swing against the skirting board, the way you watch a thing you have quietly decided to keep.
That evening she unplugged the dryer, wound the cord twice round her hand, and found the heart still warm.
