Black and grey peony flash drawing with three blooms of different sizes and dark leaves, in a neo-traditional botanical style, on white paper.

Three black and grey peony designs

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet showing three peony flowers in different sizes, with a large bloom at the lower left, a medium bloom at the top and a small bud at the top right, each surrounded by pointed leaves. The petals are outlined in bold black linework and shaded with smooth grey tones that build depth within the layered petals. The designs are drawn in black and grey on pale paper, arranged loosely so each motif can be used separately.

Sit yourself down, and mind the coal bucket, no, the other one. You want to know why a boat that carries nothing but coal and tells lies about the weather has a flower painted on its side? Because your great-grandfather Ezra couldn't paint a rose to save his life, and the peony was all that was left in the tin.

The boat was called the Patience, and she was moored below Coldharbour Lock the winter the red ran out. The red had gone to Mrs Ludlow, the lock keeper's wife, in settlement of a card debt nobody ever explained to me. So Ezra made do with lamp black and a bit of spit. He'd say a flower is a stack of promises, each petal held a little closer to the light than the one beneath it. Darken the fold, lift the edge, and the thing begins to breathe. He drew the big bloom first, bones before colour, because colour is what you add when you've got time to spare.

Mrs Ludlow came down every evening with a flask of tea and asked him why grey. He told her a bloom in shadow is still a bloom, and she laughed at him, though she stayed to watch. By February the great peony had its ruffled layers. The two smaller ones came after, one for the lintel and one for the bit of wood by the tiller where a man's hand rests when he's thinking.

When they found him on the towpath that spring, the paint was still tacky on the cabin door, and the last thing he'd done was a bud no bigger than a thumbnail, tucked low by the handle. So when you go down to the water tomorrow, look at that little one. It's the only part he finished, and he never once said it was good.
