Half avocado tattoo on upper chest

Chest · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a halved avocado with a pale green flesh, a darker green rind outline and a brown pit at the centre. The lines are simple and smooth, with soft shading on the flesh and a bold outline. The small design sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, with a knitted shawl draped over the shoulder and window blinds in the background.

Dear Mother Perpetua,

Forgive the smudge. The ink is poor and my hands are full of something green. Brother Oswin brought back a crate from the Leeds market on Thursday, and among the cabbages sat eleven avocados, hard as conkers, which none of us had seen before. The seller said they ripen in a dark cupboard. Brother Oswin said they ripen when they are ready and not a moment sooner, and he has been insufferable about it ever since.

On Saturday the cupboard was opened and the first one was soft enough to cut. I was asked to do it, being the only one who had read the label. The rind peeled back like a jacket. Inside, the flesh was the colour of new cress, pale at the edge and darker where it met the skin, and in the middle sat a brown stone as round as a bishop's ring. Brother Oswin wanted to plant it at once. Abbot Columba said we would plant it when we had agreed on where, and so we have argued about the south wall of the glasshouse for two days.

Here is what I did instead. I scooped the pit out, washed it, and pressed it into a pot of wet sand on the sill of my cell, where the morning light comes through the blind in stripes. The other half I ate with salt, standing at the window, and I thought of you and your bad knee and how you never liked anything you could not put on bread.

The sprout came up this morning, pale and crooked. I shall write again when it has leaves. Pray for it, and for the abbot's temper.

Yours in the Lord, Brother Anselm
