Geometric origami bird on the inner wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small bird in flight, drawn as an origami style figure made of straight-edged angular facets. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no shading. The bird sits alone on the inner wrist, with a palm turned upward and fingers partly visible at the lower left of the frame.

Dear Mags, the crane is finished and it is sitting on the windowsill of the flat in Leith, though the window doesn't open any more and the sill is mostly pigeon. Eleven hundred sheets, if the notice is right. Mr Okonedo from downstairs asked what I was doing with all of it and I told him I was learning to make things that go somewhere without needing an engine.

The thing you asked about on the phone, whether the bird from the lab is still flying the north route, is yes. I watched it come over the Forth on Tuesday with the grey light behind it, all straight edges and no feathers, nothing soft about it at all. It doesn't flap. It holds its shape the way a good fold holds, and when the wind takes it, it tilts and recovers and goes on. I stood on the Stockbridge bridge with a cold coffee and thought how much it looks like the drawing you pinned above the kettle in your old kitchen, the one you said your gran taught you before the grid went.

So I've been thinking that the trick is not to fold the bird perfectly but to fold it so it keeps its nerve in a crosswind. Come up at the weekend and I'll show you the crease I mean. Bring the good scissors. The council paper doesn't take a blade cleanly.

Love, Ailsa
