Sunflower tattoo below the bust
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A torso photograph showing a sunflower design with a dark centre, yellow and orange petals and green leaves, placed in the centre of the chest below the bust. The linework is clean and the petals are shaded with soft gradients. A hand rests on the chest, a ring is visible, and a black censor shape covers the upper chest above the tattoo.

Dear Ruth, the sunflowers came up along the back fence at last, eleven of them, though Dad swears only seven will see August because the slugs have had a go at the other four. He has taken to talking to them over the fence while he smokes, which Mum would have had something to say about if she were still here to say it.

The heads are the colour of marmalade when the sun catches them, the petals deepening to burnt orange at their tips, and the leaves go a grey-green in the evening that looks almost blue against the shed. The middles are nearly black, packed tight as a clock face, and I spend ten minutes each morning counting seeds I haven't yet spotted. Every one of them turns on its stalk to follow the light across the garden, so by breakfast they are all staring east at the kitchen door, like children waiting for someone to come down the stairs.
I found the packet you posted in the drawer under the bread bin, the one with Mum's handwriting on the flap saying "for Ruth's fence, don't let Dad near the slugs". I have planted the last of the seeds by the gate where she used to stand with her coffee. It came up first of anything, a day ahead of the rest, and this morning it had already turned to face the house. I thought you would want to know. Come in August. Bring the good scissors.
